Nex Awakening

Nex Awakening is a arcade inspired fast-paced platformer where you play as a cleaning robot named Can-D0, in a universe where robots have taken over the world and humans are almost forgotten. Through a system glitch Can-D0 becomes sympathetic to humans and wants to upload its new found consciousness and love towards humans to the factory’s main frame in order to turn every robot to its cause. Can-D0 must run, dash and jump through and past lasers, gaps and robots trying to correct the critical error that is Can-D0.

Design comments

Initial challenge was to come up with a game idea that had something to do with arcade games. We were tasked by Housemarque to create a arcade-style game that took inspiration from their game Nex Machina. What really stuck with me in Nex Machina was the pace of the game which was always moving forward and reacting fast. So I wanted to make the game that had the the fast-paced action without means to fight back. I wanted to get rid of the basic shooting mechanics that arcade games usually have and force player to only rely on their movement. The enemy for the player is the factory itself and only way to survive is to time Can-D0’s movement right and react with right actions.
